About Cath Hodsman

Cath Hodsman's intricate and stunning paintings of British Wildlife and Natural History are a homage to the beauty and diversity of natural Britain. She is based in the Cotswolds, where wildlife can be seen in abundance. Her specialism is painting insects in 100% anatomical accuracy. Spend a fascinating weekend with like-minded souls, exploring the work and life of famed entomological pioneer and artist, Maria Merian. Having recorded and discovered the metamorphic lifecycle of butterflies, she has been described as one of the most important scientists of all time. Cath will take students on an incredible journey, from Holland to the jungles of Surinam, exploring Maria’s many amazing achievements. Then, once fired up by this unique woman, each student will produce a beautiful watercolour painting in her beautiful and colourful style. Jan – Apr 2020 – Term 1. Home based workshops. “Studying and Capturing Light, Shade and Texture in a Bee Portrait.”

“Capturing drama in art is the secret to its success – harnessing lowlights, highlights and texture help create mood as well realism. For this term, Cath will take students on a journey that focuses on these important elements.  She will showcase how to get a little extra finesse into artwork by emphasising the very dark, the very light and the very textured areas of any study.

Each student will complete either a beautiful and detailed watercolour and/or a graphite sketch of a Male Solitary Red Mason bee. (Osmia bicornis)

In line with this, students will also learn about the fascinating life cycle of solitary bees, that make up 90% of the UK’s collective bee species; about how solitary bees make much more effective pollinators than both honey bees and bumble bees and how creating habitat, nesting sites and material for solitary bees is easy and fun to do….involving anything from rotten wood to empty snail shells….! ”
